The Club Essay Example for Free
The Club Essay The Club (1978), written by David Williamson, is a satirical play that follows the fortunes and misfortunes of a football club over the course of the season. David Williamson cleverly integrates the realistic portrayal of characters and dialogue into the play in order to effectively provide the reader with an insight into the power and politics of sport and the commoditisation of players. The main themes in The Club that David Williamson communicates across to the reader are power and the concept of ââ¬Ëhuman loyalty verses materialistic gainââ¬â¢, which will be explained in further detail below. Power is also explored extensively in The Club; much of the play is based on power struggles between the characters. As mentioned earlier, the power struggle between Laurie and Jock is evidenced by Laurieââ¬â¢s accusation that Jock supported the committeeââ¬â¢s traditional approach only to stop Laurie from succeeding. Obviously some of the characters are much more successful than others. For example, Gerry is able to skilfully manipulate the other characters so he can accomplish his own hidden agenda. However the two players, Danny (the team Captain) and Geoff, do not really become involved in these power struggles except when they aid Laurie at the end of the play. Ted (the president) has the most obvious power at the start of the play, although he steadily loses it throughout as the other characters strive to improve their standing. The desire for power is basically universal, and there is resentment from those who are not in power towards those who are. These sporting attitudes have been clearly evident in sport in the last few decades. Attitudes towards commercialism are also explored in The Club. In the play, the Club itself is just beginning the road to commercialisation with the purchase of Geoff Hayward (the star recruit) for $90,000. However, Gerry (the administrator) and Jockââ¬â¢s plans for next year not only include the dropping of some Club traditions, but also extensive commercialisation as wealthy entrepreneurs are recruited for sponsorship money which will be used to buy more players. Jock is a person who supports the commoditisation of players when it is in agreement with his goals. For example when trying to avert a playersââ¬â¢ strike, Jock claims that former Club heroes would be disgusted by the idea, ââ¬Å"I want to turn all those photographs around so they donââ¬â¢t have to look down on this shameful scene. â⬠However, it is later revealed that Jock supports the buying of players and a coach who has not played for the Club, both of which are against traditions, to ensurethat the Club wins a premiership next season. This hypocritical attitude towards tradition is probably a fairly typical Australian attitude. This attitude presented by Williamson is probably even more widespread now, as success and the reaching of goals is seen as being even more important today. Loyalty is also an important issue in The Club, although each of the characters is loyal in very different degrees and ways. Some of the characters, like Danny, are fiercely loyal to others; for example Danny threatens a playersââ¬â¢ strike if Laurie is forced to resign, ââ¬Å"If that bloody committee of yours gives Laurie the boot tonight, then we donââ¬â¢t play tomorrow. â⬠Other characters, like Jock and Gerry, lack loyalty to other people and will manipulate and lie for their own personal advantages but are loyal to the Club as a whole. Gerry believes that, ââ¬Å"Loyalty to any one individual is a luxury you canââ¬â¢t afford in a business with a multi-million dollar turnover. â⬠Gerryââ¬â¢s pragmatic attitude is perhaps typical of the attitudes which are becoming commonplace in the cutthroat business world of the 1990s. In The Club, David Williamson utilises realistic dialogue to assume convey meaning and enrich the text of the play. Williamson achieves realistic dialogue through the constant use of many language devices including emotive language insults, interruptions, sarcasm, idioms, colloquialism, slang, irony, jargon and hyperboles. The main purpose is to depict power and domination between characters. This is done through a device such as tone, as it creates an atmosphere of tension and conflict. Tone is shown between the two most powerful characters, Gerry the football administrator and Laurie the Clubââ¬â¢s coach. Gerryââ¬â¢s tone is calm and uses very formal language, which indicated his power and control over other characters. ââ¬ËYouââ¬â¢re scarcely in a position to be delivering ultimatums, Laurieââ¬â¢. Laurie also shows control by his tone and word choice. ââ¬ËIf you play well enough and the team plays well enough for the rest of the year, theyââ¬â¢ll find it pretty hard to sack meââ¬â¢. The tone in Laurieââ¬â¢s dialogue changes from exasperation to control indicating that he has become his own master. Laurieââ¬â¢s approach to dealing with situations shows his power and dominates. The shift in tone of Gerry and Laurieââ¬â¢s dialogue emphasises the power shifts that take place in ââ¬ËThe Clubââ¬â¢. The frequent use of slang and colloquial language represents the Australian culture and way of life. Also, use of football jargon such as ââ¬Ëgoal-to-goal lineââ¬â¢ shows how familiar the club members are with their sport. Another purpose shown throughout the play is the conflicting relationships between characters. Williamson has created this purpose through the use of sarcasm used by the characters. In the first scene, Ted and Danny have come across as having a conflicting relationship as there are many problems associated with the football club. ââ¬ËThis is lovely, really delightful, a strike threatââ¬â¢. By Ted using sarcasm it gets Danny worked up therefore has created a conflicting relationship. Danny who is a young footballer complains about how little money he has in the back. ââ¬ËI can hardly wait, Iââ¬â¢m taking my two best friends to Pizza Palace and putting the other half in the bankââ¬â¢. This has added tension between the two characters, and has showed how they use dialogue to create conflicting relationships. Sarcasm adds a feeling of resentment and reflects an unwillingness to be open to the prospect of resolution. Williamsonââ¬â¢s portrayal of characters, even nowadays, reflects many Australian attitudes very accurately, even though the play was written many decades ago. Some of the attitudes expressed, especially those regarding the commoditisation of sport, are even more relevant today than when the play was written, while others, such as tradition, are still equally relevant in the current Australian society. By studying ââ¬ËThe Clubââ¬â¢ it has also helped demonstrate how purposes are made by using a range of language devices such as tone and sarcasm, therefore showing how dialogue helps express its underlying theme or power and relationships. It is because of this that David Williamsons 1978 play The Club is still being performed as it gives audiences a realistic perspective into the past, present and future of sport.
Psychological Disorder Analysis Essay Example for Free
Psychological Disorder Analysis Essay Marla is a 42-year-old Hispanic female who comes to the mental health clinic complaining of having trouble sleeping, feeling ââ¬Å"jumpy all of the time,â⬠and experiencing an inability to concentrate. These symptoms cause problems for her at work, where she is an accountant. As a psychiatrist I would need to diagnose Marla with the proper disorder, explain information about the diagnosis, and discuss possible treatments with her. It would be near impossible to make an accurate diagnosis without more information. First, I will clinically assess Marla by asking her a few questions without her realizing right away that I am trying to diagnose her from the second she enters my office. I will ease into the conversation to gain more insight before she notices what I am doing. I would like to provide a brief interview of how I would expect it to go, given the disorder that I have diagnosed. Hello, Marla. I am Joy Wardrip. Itââ¬â¢s a pleasure to meet you. Will you tell me a little bit about yourself? Marla would likely introduce herself, tell me that she is an accountant. She would go on to tell me how she has been feeling anxious for a bit and how it really distracts her from her work. She would tell me how she has trouble concentrating and that too is affecting her work. She would likely be a bit emotional, perhaps teary-eyed as she expresses her frustration with the occurrence of these recent symptoms and how she would like to symptoms to be explained and to go away. She may even express how she wants to feel ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠again. I understand your frustration and it is ok to feel frustrated. How long ago did you notice a change in your behavior? Marla would let me know that she had been feeling this way for the past six to eight months. She would also tell me that she canââ¬â¢t remember anything that has happened in her life to explain the anxieties that she was feeling. She would tell me how she would like for things to go back to the way that they used to be. How is your relationship with your parents? Marla would describe a great upbringing. She would explain how she is very close to both of her parents. She would go on to describe her childhood, which was abuse and torment free. She would speak of many good memories with her parents and how she is an only child. She would go on to tell me that she was quite spoiled and had no bad memories of being a young girl. Is there any mental illness that runs in your family? Also, have you ever been diagnosed with any disorders or are you on any type of medication? Marla would tell me that no psychological disorders were apparent in her family and that she is not currently taking any medication. She would tell me that she had only just recently went to her family doctor to discuss her symptoms and that the doctor recommended that she speak with someone to find the root of her troubles and to explore the possibility of her having a disorder. She would tell me that is why she came to see me. What was life like before you felt the symptoms that you have described to me? Marla would respond with how she was always very happy, always smiling. She would tell me how she lived a worry-free life and was very social. She would discuss how she had many friends and how she enjoyed her work. She would describe herself prior to the symptoms as someone who was very optimistic and upbeat. She would then go on to say that she only just realized that it had been quite a while since she had gone out and dined with any of her friends. Have you suffered any type of trauma? This can include anything from your past that caused you great pain or suffering mentally or physically. This could be an accident, death of someone close to you or abuse. Marla would bring up her childhood again and remind me that it was abuse free. She would also let me know that she had never been in a car accident, aside from a fender bender which really caused no damage to herself or her vehicle for that matter. She would tell me that she had been a victim of an earthquake years ago but that it didnââ¬â¢t seem to affect her anymore. She said that she was a bit shaken after the earthquake but that she had moved passed it almost effortlessly and that she hadnââ¬â¢t even really thought about the incident in some time. I would like to go back to something that you mentioned earlier. You said that you hadnââ¬â¢t gone out in a while, are their certain situations that you try and avoid because of your anxiety? Marla would explain that she didnââ¬â¢t like going to work. That she was missing several days because she felt uncomfortable in her office. She would explain that the more that she called in the less motivated she got to go and that it was really causing a problem for her at the workplace. She would tell me that she was afraid if something didnââ¬â¢t give, she would be fired. She would tell me how she wanted to leave while working because she felt claustrophobic, as though she needed to get some air or go clear her head. You mentioned that you have been having trouble sleeping here lately. Can you tell me a little more about that? Do you know of anything that may have lead to the trouble sleeping? Marla would tell me that she had been having trouble sleeping throughout the night. She would let me know that she didnââ¬â¢t struggle to get to sleep; she just had trouble staying asleep. She would let me know that it was really irritating her and that it was affecting her at work. She would tell me that she wasnââ¬â¢t arriving late to work but that she didnââ¬â¢t feel that she had gotten enough rest when she got to work and that she felt very tired during the work day. Do you often have dreams that recur often or do you have nightmares often? Also, how often do you wake and remember your dreams and what do you remember about them? Marla would likely tell me that she didnââ¬â¢t dream often, nor did she have nightmares. She might say that perhaps she doesnââ¬â¢t remember the dreams once she has awakened. However, Marla would share with me that she often felt very shaken and jumpy after having waken up. Had this taken place, I may suggest that she keep a journal by her bed so that she can record anything that she remembers about her dreams and how she is feeling upon waking up. Have you ever experienced flashbacks? This is when something seems very real and the images are very clear. Perhaps you have experienced feelings similar to the feeling that you felt during the earthquake that we discussed earlier? Marla would tell me that she really struggled with flashbacks following the earthquake, but that she hadnââ¬â¢t had any experiences with them from some time. She would tell me that it had been a few years since she had experienced them. Following the interview, I would likely diagnose Marla with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I would explain to her that it is a incapacitating anxiety disorder that is experienced by people who suffer traumatic events. I will explain that these events can be related to warfare, rape, abuse, car accidents, or in her case, an earthquake. I would explain that the traumatic event can produce many characteristic symptoms which she has described to me, such as flashbacks, inability to concentrate, insomnia, and changes in emotions. Finally, I would explain the origin of the disorder by using the cognitive model of psychology. According to this model, one must understand human thought to understand its behavior. When people show abnormal behaviors many theorists look at cognitive problems. These problems can include illogical thinking processes and maladaptive assumptions. I would then try and help her to realize what she is doing and how she is responding to the trauma of the earthquake so that she can later focus on changing her faulty ideas and thinking processes for a form of treatment. This treatment would be achieved through a series of therapies in which I teach her to calm herself and control her emotions and behaviors (Comer, 2005).

Leaders impact our daily lives and futures. In good times and bad, there is always a need for strong leadership. The leaders determine the success of a business or an industry it chooses or inherits. How does someone earn the designation of being a great leader? History and current experiences provide guidance on how one might develop the abilities demonstrated by respected leaders. (http://www.nkdlearning.co.uk/case-studies/british-airways-case-study/) MOTIVATION The history of motivational study has seen the rise of differing, but not equally exclusive methods to motivation. There are many challenging theories which endeavour to explain the landscape of motivation. Such theories are all at least to some extent true, and help clarify the behaviour of firm people at certain times. But, the study for a comprehensive theory of motivation at work seems ineffective. All the theories existing here have their critics but still any theory or study which helps in understanding of how best to motivate people at work must be beneficial. Even though there is no one single answer, as a group the different theories deliver a framework within which we can try to answer the query of how best to motivate individuals at work. We are therefore left to critic the relevance of these diverse theories, to a specific work situation ( Blane, ND). (http://www.examstutor.com/business/resources/studyroom/people_and_organisations/motivation_theory/index.php) TECHNIQUES USED BY BA TO MOTIVATE ITS EMPLOYEES Workplace BA endeavour to provide a working environment that will engages, supports, engages and develops its employees. The key factor of BA workplace pillar is to motivate its employees to be dedicated towards theirà duty as they are the ones who make the airline run and BA require them on the board till the journeys end. BA diversity and inclusion team has established a plan for the company that encourages all the employees with the aim of identifying aptitude and encouraging flexible rational. This plan is reinforced and united into all sections over BA senior level promoters and defenders. This in opportunity will identify and meet the varied needs of Ba employees. Another strategy BA have set up is for conflict and harassment resolution. To formulate this strategy BA has hired a total of 50 advisors and mediators employed across British Airways to make a culture where self-respect and admiration are trademarks of relationships at work, and where nuisance or mistreatment are not allowed to be abided. Rewards and recognition BA knows that what is the importance of reward in making it a great business holder to work. BA is very much dedicated in building an environment where BA employees feel valued and are known fairly in the organization for making their contribution in the organization individually. British Airways deals with two types of principal funded defined benefit pension schemes in the UK, the Airways Pension Scheme (APS) and the New Airways Pension Scheme (NAPS). From April 1, 2003, new employees were allowed to join the British Airways Retirement Plan (BARP). Smart Pension measures, which allow BA UK-based employees to make their pension contributions in a more tax well-organized way, were presented in early 2008. Around 90 per cent of those employees who are entitled are now benefiting from this arrangement. One of the main aim of BA is to provide total reward packages for its employees which will inspire them in high performance and exceptional customer service throughout the business However, BA substituted its grade based reward scheme for managers with a new broad band system which links rewards more closely to individual performance and ability. On the other hand BA Bravo recognition scheme allows it to distinguish people across their business for their hard work and attainments. Improved training In simple terms, training and development refers to the imparting of specific skills, abilities and knowledge to an employee. A formal definition of training development is, it is any attempt to improve current or future employee performance by increasing an employees ability to perform through learning, usually by changing the employees attitude or increasing his or her skills and knowledge (Rao, 2009). Rao, D.(2009), HRM-Training and Development, June, MBAguys.net[Online] Available at: http://www.mbaguys.net/t2217/ Accessed on: 1st December] In the last year we delivered 235,000 days of training. We also welcomed some 3,100 people into the company which required a high level of induction training and a refresh for our new entrant training programmes. BA has established several training centre for its employees where they are been trained not practically but mentally too. BA invest more effectively in the development of its employees to build both their skills and educational standards for this it has opened several vocational study centres. With the help of these centres all new applicant of cabin crew can now achieve an NVQà Levelà 2 stipulation on accomplishment of their training which is comparable to 4 GCSEs. Leadership development Leadership is a major main concern for BA, for which BA have established a number of platforms to improve the competence and presentation of its leaders. This comprises of a day plan for all leaders, called Leadingà theà Business, which emphases on the experiments of managing variation, pleasing employees and bringing results to support the business plan. BA have also advanced a leadership website to deliver information and training resources to provision managers with all aspects of their characters. BA now mainly focus on talent and leadership expansion over the coming year as BA shape the ability it need for development. (http://www.britishairways.com) Abraham.H.Maslowà published A Theory of Human Motivation in 1943. In this work he argued that people areà wanting / needing beings. As such we always want more, and what we want depends on what we already have. Maslow suggested human needs can be arranged into a series of levels, aà hierarchyà of importance. Abraham Maslows Hierarchy of Needs Maslows theory of motivation is the theory which deals with the aspects of people needs in the place where they work. The theory describes about the unfulfilled needs of the employees which leads to conflicts in the organization. The structure of this theory is basically like a pyramid having five different sections of different needs. These are the basic needs of the people working which are need to be fulfilled so they can develop themselves as well as the company they working in, The levels are: Physiological Needs: It is the basic need of the people, it deals with the aspects like food, shelter, clothes, water in order to survive. People expect decent pay from where they work so they can fulfill their basic needs. Safety Needs: It is the need which is concerned with the physical, survival or sense of security. In workplaces people expect high standard of work, safety and security, intervals of rest, pension and medical treatment from the company. Social Needs : It deals with the aspects of love and affection. In workplaces people work hard and they form groups in which they require friendship. giving respect to each other and providing social facilities and friendly environment. Self-Esteem : It is one of the major factor of Maslows Theory of motivation as it speaks about ones self-respect. This means getting respect from others, feeling valued, having confidence and giving rewards for better performance in the company. Self-Actualisation: It deals with the full potential of people. It describes the needs of people working like have challenging jobs, opportunities for creativity, achievement in work promotion. Maslows Hierarchy of Needs USE OF MASLOW THEORY OF MOTIVATION AT BA Self-Actualisation needs: BA is fulfilling this need of its employees by giving them challenging jobs and providing them with training so they can develop their skills and perform well in their field of work and gain progress. Self esteem needs: BA is satisfying its employees this need by giving them job titles, position in the company and receiving feedbacks of job. Social needs: BA fulfils this need of its employees by making them work in groups and motivate them to work as a team. BA also organises cultural programs in the company for the employees where they can interact with each other and form social groups. Safety needs: for this need BA has introduced several pension plans where employees will be provided with pension after their retirement and bonuses at present time.BA has introduced free medical centres for its employees. Physiological need: BA fulfils this need of its employees by providing them with proper working conditions and paying them well according to their performance. Team effectiveness at BA Each colleague through the company together forms Britishà Airways and therefore must work together to accomplish the organizational vision and goal. Diversity and inclusion British Airways is very pleased to be one of the business organization that salutes and nurtures variances. Diversity and inclusion one are of the method of life for British Airways. The main emphasis of BA has been on developing its Dignity at Working strategy to reduce provocation and mistreatment in the workplace. BA has selected and skilled Provocation Advisors from across the world of business ,in response to their employees requests for people they can approach privately about any issues they may have and try to solve them. The advisors behaves as a listening ear to the employees and provide them with the guidance and practical knowledge. BA consults with its disabled employee group to identify disability issues and help them to ensure that they are making all BA products, services and training fully comprehensive and available. All the employees are trained in incapacity awareness to increase their awareness about the all disabled employees and customers. BA has also introduced a Building Ability strategy system to classify and encourage the needs of disabled customers and employees. BA frequently look at how it can progress the voyage of knowledge for the disabled customers and for the first time BA has conducted detailed customer research to classify areas for development. In July 2008, 522 members of the British Paralympics Association moved to Beijing for the Paralympic Games, providing BA with important trainings which BA can interpret into day-to-day practice. Generally, BA Pride at Work strategy comprises of process training, communications and workshops across the business which are helpful in development of BA as well as its employees. Colleague involvement BA certifies that all its colleagues are to be kept well knowledgeable about the working of its Company, customers and industry by using inclusive internal communications technique. BA gives priority to Face-to-face communication and run regular updates across the Company so that more people can interact at a time, share ideas with senior and line managers. BA also run workshops which are helpful for the managers in communicating and making key statements and also online forums and an online Ideas which can exchange to inspire wider discussion. On the Other hand BA has introduced online communication channels for the colleagues. (http://www.britishairways.com) Team Effectiveness Theory used by BA McGregors Theory X and Theory Y The motivation of employees is generally the accountability of the manager. Afterà McGregors study- The Human Side of Management recommends that two styles ofà employee exist, each retaining different needs. Theory X- expresses a negative sight of human nature, depicting employees as lethargic, unambitious people who loathing work and need to be measured through sentence. Theory Y- discusses that employees are not money motivated but increase recompense from the job itself. Theory Y grants employees as self-disciplined, work obliged people who desire accountability and inspired fulfillment. British Airways has adopted style of Theory Y to improve its Team effectiveness. Evidently Theory X and Theory Y workers will respond in conflicting means to altered management efforts to increase Team effectiveness. The Theory X employee is more expected to react to financial encouragements, so BA focus less on these types of employees and Theory Y employees are encouraged by job enhancement, job expansion, job rotation and superiority control groups which leads the company into the directions of success that is why BA focuses mainly on these types of employees and provide them with bonuses, pensions, training of working in groups as a team. Theory Xà would lead BA towards falling in the area of better service. Communication To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others. Anthony Robbins quotesà (Americanà advisor to leaders) Communication is the process of sending a message through a channel and receiving the feedback from the same medium. COMMUNICATION AT BRITISH AIRWAYS BAs strategy is reproduced in its mission statement, i.e. To be the undisputed leader in world travel. BAs communication strategy makes use of different IT communication system with different programs guarantee smooth running of the operations. The information system is accountable (Britishairwaysjobs.com, Undated).for all the working of It through BA groups and plays a crucial role in modelling the airline in future. British Airways symbols practice of Corporate Communications that is the global reputation of organisations manager and confirms that all concerned parties are awake of the airlines expansions and news. Corporate Communication is accountable of the airlines Intranet satisfied, which is one of the key networks used in care of mobile staff and providing with the latest newscast and strategies. British Airways has a distant employee population that is frequently travelling in all angles through the world. Regardless of this task, BA employees are well connected via the companys Intranet; presence in the sky, airports or on highways. BA also presented the Employee Self Service (ESS) project to deliver tools that agree staff worldwide to accomplish their own day-to-day management over the web (Computing, 2001). Corporate Communications is too responsible in the production of BA News, a weekly newspaper which is spread to its employees and team players. A protected, healthy and dependable 247 through the world IT procedure is used to guarantee an improved teamwork (networking) and communication channel; leading finished communication. BA another important channel of communication is IP Technology. Communication channel has a powerful tool of Advertisement. A sum of professional communications agencies are organised to distribute the airlines key communications to customers and media of BA operates in more than 80 countries Another important BA communication channel is BA Media. The sales arm of the communication channels for British Airways Media presented by Britains premier airline brand. The communications setting that BA Media bids is both exclusive and ever growing, giving an opening to reach its audience. BA Media is responsible in the production of Business in fields like TV, Magazines, Marketing material lounges, Radio magazines etc. (http://www.britishairways.com) RECOMMENDATION It appears that the main cause of the difficulties faced by British Airways is owed to the unplanned management variations executed. The problems also rise because of the insufficient knowledge of its management about the procedure of planned management and new management structures. It can be observed as a set of theories structures designed to describe the factors essential for the performance of organisations and to support managers in thinking about motivating, leadership, planning ,communication techniques and team effectiveness for the development of the employees as well as the organisation. These can be accomplished through: Reduce introduction to unprofitable sections of the market while taking strides to maintain and progress upon the effectiveness of its system. The recruitment process at BA is very time consuming due to the large number of candidates applying, the company must enhance a quicker decision making system or standard. BA should appoint more good inspirational leaders so the employees can get motivated. BA must concentrate upon the employees who are not working up to their mark and avoiding working in groups, it should adopt some strategy to motivate them and make them work in groups which will help in improving team effectiveness. The company should get in touch with their clients when they have some promotional offers. BA should have more of the customer service and loyalty programs it creates an atmosphere of self-awareness in the organisation among the employees. Conclusion British Airways remains carefully enthusiastic about its future projections. However, it is convinced that significantly more work lies in the future if the airline is to be successful. John Steinbeck Essay -- Essays Papers
John Steinbeck A novelist is someone who writes novels, or writes a fancy work of fiction which often has a complicated plot, many major and minor characters, a significant theme, and several varied settings. A novelist will use literary devices such as characterization, tone, symbolism, imagery, and figurative language. John Steinbeck, an American novelist, uses many literary devices such as metaphors, similes, imagery, and figurative language along with excellent descriptive words to develop his characters and vividly describe their surroundings. His masterly of these and other techniques, in my opinion, is why John Steinbeckââ¬â¢s novels, like The Grapeââ¬â¢s of Wrath and Of Mice and Men, have survived the test of time. Johnââ¬â¢s writing style was developed from the experiences in his life; this may be why he is so interesting to read, because John has had an interesting life. John Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902 in the Salinas Fertile Valley, California. His father, John Ernst Steinbeck, was a simple farmer and the treasurer of Monterey County, California. His mother, Olive Hamilton Steinbeck, was a school teacher and she was the one person who was responsible for introducing him to the wonderful world of famous literature. She also read and taught him Shakespeare and other famous writers. John Steinbeck had two younger sisters, Ester and Elizabeth. John grew up in Salinas on a farm and was surrounded by animals and other forms of nature, this is the main reason that John had such a love of all forms of nature and wildlife. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1919 and then went to Standford University in 1920. At Standford he published ââ¬Å"The Standford Spectatorm,â⬠his first short story. During a break from Standford, John got a job on Spreckelââ¬â¢s Ranch near Salinas. While he worked there, he was able to observe firsthand the lives of ââ¬Å"bindle stiffsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"ranch bossesâ⬠. These observations would later on become the characters in Of Mice and Men. John eventually dropped out of Standford University and began his career as a full-time writer. In 1930, Steinbeck meet Ed Ricketts, who soon is to be his life-long friend. Also that year, he married his sweetheart, Ms. Carol Henning. He then moved to Pacific Grove to find a publisher for A God Unknown. He failed to find a publisher but that did not stop him and he began writing stori... ...iptions and literary devices, such as metaphors and similes, the characters seem to come to life for the reader. Johnââ¬â¢s vivid descriptions of nature really help the reader see the surroundings in his novels. The following quote starts of the book Of Mice and Men and contains some of the most descriptive language, and imagery in the hole book. ââ¬Å"A few miles south of the soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too: for it has slipped twinkling in the yellow sands before reaching the narrow pool. On one side the golden foothill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky Gabilan Mountains but on the valley side the water is lined with trees ââ¬â willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in there lower leafs the debris of the withers flooding: and sycamores with mottled, white recombered limbs and branches that are over the pool.â⬠This and other examples in Of Mice and Men show just how well John Steinbeck describes the settings that are in his novels. Many other writers have analyzed Johnââ¬â¢s work. Most writers would have to agree with me on my opinion of his writing technique.

Periodical Review Of Human Com :: essays research papers
This is a review of Human Communications Research (HCR) journal. It is published quarterly beginning in September (Fall) and ending in June (Summer). The review being done is on Volume 22, which extends from September 1995 to June 1996. The journal takes a behavioral science perspective in its research of human communications. Research areas include Interpersonal, organizational, mass communication, methodology, information systems and persuasion. HCR is a periodical that recognizes that the world is constantly evolving and that communications research must do the same in order to develop a more clear understanding of the important issues and situational demands that are at hand. In maintaining this approach, HCR focuses on exploring new research areas as well as taking a more theoretical approach. They are also trying to acknowledge more international research studies. Methodologically speaking, they seem to remain open to possibilities and try to promote discussion through their ac ceptance of articles. The new senior editor Cindy Gallois, in her editorial best describes the general direction and intent of HCR. One of the main goals is to encourage diversity so that HCR will have something of interest for every reader. She also says that HCR is moving with a general trend that is away from the databased research studies towards more theory-based research and rigorous interpretations of results. Although they are trying to increase the variety of topics, they are still maintaining a behavioral science approach to communications. Gallois also welcomes the expansion of methods on research and is a firm believer in the idea that a good researcher is one that is capable of choosing the approach and methodology that best fit the research question. It is also her belief that HCR will develop more of an international flavor because the present volume marks the first time it has been edited by a non-U.S. resident. This will allow for a greater recognition of the active communication research studies being done in many countries. Upon review of articles in HCR, I found quite few having similar topics. These included: Communication in the workplace, persuasion, deception, and communication support systems. These topics all deal with important aspects of human communication and are consistent with what is trying to be achieved by HCR. The intent of this journal is to improve human communication in areas that it would be widely useful consistent with the changing world. By researching different perspectives of issues, HCR hopes to get a better understanding of what the obstacles have previously been in order to try and improve communication relationships.

W.S. Merwin as an Influential Writer of Poetry and Prose :: W.S. Merwin Essays
W.S. Merwin as an Influential Writer of Poetry and Prose Emergence At the day's end all our footsteps are added up to see how near. W.S. Merwin W.S. Merwin is an award-winning author of a wide variety of both poetry and prose books. He has served as a tremendous influence to me and has helped guide me along my writing journey. He inspires my best writing and has helped to shape my stylistics. I seek to follow in the footsteps of perhaps one of the most well known and popular poets of this century. W.S. Merwin was born in New York City in 1927 and grew up in Union City, New Jersey, as well as Scranton, Pennsylvania (Merwin, Selected 279). From 1949 to 1951, Merwin was a world traveler, as he worked as a tutor in Portugal, France, and Majorca (Merwin, Selected 279). In addition to writing poetry, Merwin also wrote articles for The Nation as well as radio scripts for the BBC (Merwin, Selected 279). One of his most famous poetry books, The Carrier of Ladders, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1970 (Merwin, Selected 279). In addition to his books of poetry, he published three books of prose: The Miner's Pale Children, Houses and Travelers, and Unframed Originals. Merwin received many outstanding awards in his career including The Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets in 1974, and the Governor's Award for Literature of the State of Hawaii (Merwin, Selected 279). Merwin's writing style is unique from many other professional writers. "Merwin has been committed faithfully to the energies of fragmentation, erasure, and all those energies we identify as negative" ("Boston Review" 1). Because Merwin is able to use this technique so effectively, I attempt to follow in his footsteps and try some of it out on my own. Rick Jones and I used this idea in our collaborative poem, "pierced existence," in which we did not use proper capitalization or follow some of the most basic rules English rules. When I write in this style, I feel more relaxed because I do not have to be concerned with grammar and spelling. I am better able to concentrate on imagery and the use of words. Merwin's magisterial control of lyric syntax and narrative order give the reader no difficulty; they are able to understand his work since it flows free from form ("Boston Review" 1). "The consistency, the inclusive and transforming vitality of the work makes it the crowning achievement of Merwin's long and extremely diversified career" ("Boston Review" 1).

How can Hughes Electrical improve it market Share? Essay
Business Studies Coursework Name: ââ¬â Richard Rutter Candidate: ââ¬â 3186 How can Hughes Electrical improve it market Share? Aim: o To find out how Hughes Electrical increase its market share. In order to do this I will need to: o Research the history of Hughes. v o Plot where Hughes retail outlet(s) are in Norfolk. v o To research how location, can help Hughes, increases its market share. o Research what types of products they sell. o Find out what their target audience is. o Research the known methods of promotion. o Distinguish, which methods will be suitable for Hughes. o Recommend how Hughes can increase its market share, in the next five years. Objectives: o Find out what their performance has been like during the last 2 years. o Compare them to a successful competitor (Argos.), to see how theyââ¬â¢re differing and if they are more or less effective. History of Events concerning Hughes: 1921 ââ¬â Hughes Electrical was founded in Lowestoft, Suffolk by Frank Hughes, a young electrical engineer. 1928 ââ¬â Frank bought his first shop and the family literally lived over it for some years. 1946 ââ¬â Frank retired and his sons Peter and Jim took over the management of the business. 1950 ââ¬â Hughes was determined to get into the Television Age. 1953 ââ¬â Hughes had gained experience installing many televisions in Suffolk. 1962 ââ¬â Hughes began its expansion, when it purchases Norfolk radio in Great Yarmouth. The Hughes Company then had 5 shops all trading within 10 miles of Lowestoft and all selling or renting televisions, audio products and home appliances. 1970 ââ¬â Further expansion into the Norwich area in 1972, Ipswich in 1976 and Bury St Edmunds in 1979. 1980 ââ¬â Hughes Electrical product range has expanded enormously during the last 2 decades as video recording and digital technology opened up whole new consumer markets. 1985 ââ¬â Video cameras were introduced and with increasing miniaturisation became camcorders and lately digital camcorders. 1990-2003 ââ¬â Effectively Hughes has been using the same tried and tested methods to stay a successful business for many years, and I expect many more years to come. Hughes has evolved from: (in 80 years.) Type of organisation Hughes Electrical is a local High Street retailer based in Norfolk and Suffolk. They specialise in supplying analogue/digital multi media equipment for purchase or hire such as Television, Audio and Camcorder (electrical and audio goods). Hughes also has a large range of household electrical products (small and large white goods), which are also available to purchase or hire. They take great pride in their product knowledge and provide a full in house service facility for goods in and out of warranty. Hughes operates from the tertiary sector, this is a growing industry and Hughes is already well developed, this is a strong advantage to Hughes. What makes a business successful? In theory a business needs to follow the four pââ¬â¢s to be successful, these are product, place, price and promotion. Product ââ¬â This is the thing that is being sold, either a service or an object, the company will need a good product that sells well and creates a lot of revenue for the business. Place ââ¬â This is where the business is located, which is crucial if the company is a store, but less of crucial if the company is catalogue order for instance. Price ââ¬â The price must be fair to the consumer, and competitive, so that there will be a smooth cash flow through the business. This is healthy for the consumer and the business. Promotion ââ¬â The promotion is the way in which the business promotes a service or a product, unless the product is well known already this will be another crucial factor in the companyââ¬â¢s sales. How Hughes are successful in their product. Hughes is hugely successful in this area, they offer a full service to their customers, and this involves hiring out their goods or selling them directly. All products have a 12-month guarantee, which in this time if the product develops a fault it will be fixed free of charge. Any rented product will be installed free of charge. Customers will find this very satisfying, because they know that if anything goes wrong then they can take it back no questions asked. Hughes is well known for selling electrical goods and at low prices, this is a good market to be selling to, because the demand for electrical goods will always be big. This is because technology is ever changing, while reading the history of Hughes, I noticed that when a new product or technology is released Hughes is nearly always the first company to sell them. Hughes sell well-known trusted brand names, this works in their favour in the long run, although the product not being the cheapest available on the market, they are well known and trusted, so they are more popular and sell better. Some examples of their products are shown below: Site location: Photograph of Site: (Norwich, Castle Mall.) Why Hughes location is successful and unsuccessful. Hughes is located in the castle Mall Norwich. This is a busy shopping mal, which attracts people from families to teenagers. The shop itself is situated next to Argos and the Sony centre. All three stores are potential competitors. This may be an advantage, because they all need to attract similar customers, it also means that theyââ¬â¢re prices must be competitive to win sales over the other two outlets. Hughes is very easy to get to for customers, because it is opposite an escalator and an elevator. The castle mall has its own parking facilities, so that customers to the mall can park very close. The whole of the castle mall is under ground and which means customers can shop whatever the weather is like. The range of other types of shops such as clothes, food and services is a bonus to Hughes, because customers even going to the cinema may end up browsing through the store. Customers can go to the shopping mal and buy all of their products in one go as well. The only negative point is that Hughes must coincide with the castle malls opening hours, e.g. they are not permitted to open on Christmas day. Hughes will only loose a minute profit. I conclude with the castle mal is Hughes strongest positive side, because it helps them attract endless customers. How Hughes prices its products to be more successful. As explained in the location, Hughes is situated next-door to competitors Argos and the Sony Centre. The three stores are constantly trying to undercut each otherââ¬â¢s prices. This attracts new customers, who are interested in the low prices. Price wars are healthy to the customer, because it drives down their prices, it helps keep the businesses on their toes and alert, because they need to keep their costs down to make a profit. Hughes has got their pricing perfected, customers browsing the store notice this, and always come back. How Hughes is successful in promoting its products. Here are some of the known methods of promoting a product: * Price promotions. * Commercial Advertising (Radio, Television, Newspapers.) * Coupons * Competitions and prizes * Frequent user / loyalty incentives * Point-of-sale displays ââ¬â where the product is placed in the store Promotion is the area in which I think Hughes needs to improve. I believe Hughes is badly advertised and has little publicity. My questionnaires primary reason is to find the public awareness relating to Hughes. Primary Research Primary research is a type of researching. This method of research can be very time consuming. The different primary researches are: * Questionnaires * Interviews * Experiments For my primary research I have decided to compile a questionnaire, as it is effective and easy to make and distribute, because I will only need to question two people. I will distribute it to the manager of Hughes. I will distribute another to a competitor of Hughes (Manager of Argos Castle Mall.) Example Questionnaires. Questionnaire (Manager of Hughes.) Secondary research is research, which has already been carried out. It comes in two separate forms, internal and external. Internal sources Internal research has already been collected, by the company and is free and easy to use. External sources External research is research, which has taken pace outside of the business, it has no purpose and so is a very general guide. External resources I could use: * Newspapers * Internet * Magazines * Library Secondary research is very cheap and easy, I have decided to look on their website to find out a little more about Hughes, as it may help me to make recommendations. Our Service Pledge Hughes Electrical has always put its customersââ¬â¢ service requirements first. We are qualified to repair nearly all brands of electrical products and employ over 100 engineers who do just that. We want you to come back and shop with us again and again and we know that you will only do so if you are happy with both our prices and service. Our pledge is to provide our Internet customers with an after-sales service which is as good as that enjoyed by the customers of our 35 high street stores, and to pay as much attention to your requirements after your purchase as we do before. Product Guarantee All of our goods are supplied with a minimum of a 12 months parts and labour guarantee starting from the day of delivery. In event of a fault within the guarantee period In event of a fault we recommend that you initially consult the instruction manual which is provided with your product, there is normally a frequently asked questions section at the back of the manual which often resolves what was thought to be a problem. If the fault persists and the product was purchased from one of our shops, please call your nearest service centre for attention ââ¬â contact details can be found in the contact us section. If the fault persists and the product was bought online, please email us at webservice@hughestv.co.uk or call our help line on 01473 275887 so that we can provide immediate assistance. If this fault is within 28 days of purchase we will either arrange to collect the goods and exchange them, or if you would prefer issue you with a full refund. If the fault is after 28 days of purchase but before the expiry of the guarantee, we will, at our discretion, either collect the item from your house for inspection and if necessary carry out a repair at our service centre or we will instruct an engineer to inspect and repair the item in your house. It is your responsibility to pack the goods adequately for our collection as Hughes Electrical will not accept any responsibility for damage caused by inadequate packaging. It is important to note that if Hughes Electrical incurs a charge for service or carriage for an item that is not faulty then we reserve the right to charge this amount to you. In event of a fault outside the guarantee period If the fault occurs after the expiry of the manufacturerââ¬â¢s or extended guarantee then we will offer you a chargeable repair service. We recommend that you consult the instruction book provided with your product and pay particular attention to the Frequently Asked Questions in the back. Portable items and televisions up to 28 inch will be collected for repair in our workshops. It is your responsibility to ensure adequate packaging of these items as Hughes Electrical will not accept any responsibility for damage to the product while it is in transit.
