INBOX (BOOKS ACQUIRED) The History of Bees by Maja Lunde.  This novel, pitched as Station Eleven meets Never Let Me Go (yes, please), is already an international bestseller. It comes out in North America in August. There are  three parallel storylines involving beekeepers: one set in 1852, one in 2007, and one in 2098, after all the bees have died and humans have turned to hand-pollination in order to survive. I’m most intrigued by the last storyline, as it seems increasingly like we’re already living in a dystopian novel. I snagged the bookstore’s only advance copy of this before anyone else could. This Is Just My Face by Gabourey Sidibe.  Sidibe’s memoir is about growing up in New York, her early job as a phone sex worker, and how she got into acting, among other things. She was in Toronto this week, and I was lucky enough to attend the event and grab a copy of the book. I can report that Sidibe is hilarious, charming, and extremely stylish. And also has a very accurate interpretation of “Hotline Bling.” A trusted friend told me that her book is very honest, and I can’t wait to read it. Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. I’ve heard nothing but good things about The Daily Show host’s memoir from a wide selection of friends and acquaintances with pretty different reading tastes. With a white father and a black mother, Noah was literally “born a crime” in apartheid-era South Africa. The essays in this book recount his path from this early life to his starring role in late-night American television. I have high expectations for this one. OUTBOX (BOOKS FINISHED) Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.  I love Agatha Christie and classic British cozies, and evidently so does Horowitz, because this book-within-a-book is a clever homage to golden age detective fiction. The story begins in the present day with an editor, Susan Ryeland, settling in to read the latest manuscript from her troublesome star author, Alan Conway, who writes murder mysteries starring amateur detective Atticus Pund. Along with Susan, we too read the manuscript, a classic country house murder set in a small English village in 1955. But as she reads, Susan begins to suspect that there’s more truth than fiction contained in Alan’s new book… This one comes out in June, and I recommend it to anyone else who needs to wash those images of Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot out of their heads. Orchids on Your Budget by Marjorie Hillis.  This book of advice from 1937 was republished as Bubbly on Your Budget and appears to also be available under that title. I read Hillis’s first advice book, Live Alone and Like It, during a difficult time last year, and her practical and witty life advice was just what I needed. Orchids on Your Budget is more focused on moneyâ€"specifically budgeting and economizingâ€"and therefore a little bit less delightful, but still full of Hillis’s trademark one-liners. A free market system refers to a market economy based on market forces with little or no government interventions. Capitalism has been widely adopted in the modern economy despite its spectacular drawbacks (Brockman et al. 2011). As a result of free market, several issues have been created and it requires efforts from both the business players and the governments to remedy the situation .These issues are poverty, gender inequalities, ageing societies, youth unemployment and skills shortages. These issues act to the disadvantage of the countrys current and future situation. This report will start by discussing the Capitalist system followed by in-depth quantifying of youth unemployment and poverty. And finally discussing measures that business and Government need to take to improve levels of youth unemployment and poverty. Capitalist System Capitalist system is an economic system based on private ownership of factors of production and whose operations are profit motivated. Zimbalist et al. (1988) defined pure capitalism system as the one in which means of production (physical capital) are owned and run by private entities (capitalist class) for profits. Most of other people in the economy work for salaries and wages. According to Gregory and Stuart (2013), decisions within the capitalism economy are decentralized by the government and rest with the owners of factors of production who are material motivated to participate. Aspects of Capitalist System Capitalist system is characterized by capital accumulation, private property, wage labor, voluntary exchange, competitive markets and price system (Louis Hyman and Edward E. Baptist (2014). These aspects are discussed below Accumulation of Capital This refers to profit maximization to increase self-worth. Capitalists are devoted to increase their capital in order to increase profits which act as incentives to innovate, work harder and be efficient in production processes (Heilbroner et al. 2008). The economy lacks new creativity and diverse thinking that is naturally present amongst the young people. Political Unrest When youth are idle as a result of unemployment, they engage in riots and protests against the government of their country. Increased levels of youth unemployment lead to political unrest in the country and they threaten the internal security of a nation. The government should set financial institutions that will enable young people to access capital and credit at relatively lower interest rates and friendly terms. Training youth on entrepreneurship .The government need to empower young generation with startup skills of a business to enable creation of jobs among youths. This will reduce the level of youth unemployed in the economy. Vocational training in the learning. Governments need to train it young people on other skills not necessary academic knowledge. These skills reduce the level of unemployed youths. Governments need to do the following to reduce poverty in a free market economy; Protectionism of the infant industries to enable their establishment in the economy untill they mature and can stand for themselves. From this study, youth unemployment can be reduced by equipping young people with more vocational, life-skills, entrepreneurial and current 21st century job skills. Businesses can also reduce poverty by creating more jobs for the citizens, designing products for the bottom pyramid and promoting entrepreneurship to the people through social responsibility programs. In summary, capitalist system is not sustainable and causes harm to other players in an economy if no further remedy actions are taken. Priming Abstract The objective of our experiment, got a clue was to discover if we could change an individual's stereotypical perception on various items. We would try to achieve this change in perceptions by priming our subjects with positive or negative words flashed over the items for a short period of time. The first step taken to achieve our challenge was to have our subjects fill out questionnaire rating various objects from negative to positive, or negative to positive on a scale of one to five. After rating the various objects our subject then watched a slide show containing twenty of the forty items they had to rate on the questionnaire. The slide show consisted of three groups positive negative controlled. During the slide show all subjects receives the same picture in a neutral state. A few steps further on, Bonnie stopped being so angry. She was too scared; the fear was pushing the anger out of her. She should have headed back to the dorm when Meredith and Elena did, but she'd assured them, gaily, that Zander would walk her back. How could he have just left her? She wrapped her arms around herself tightly and went as fast as she could without actual y running, her stupid high-heeled going-out-dancing shoes pinching and making the bal s of her feet ache. It was real y late; most of the other people who lived on campus must be tucked into their beds by now. The silence was unsettling. When the footsteps began behind her, it was even worse. She wasn't sure she was real y hearing them at first. Gradual y, she became aware of a faint, quick padding in the distance, someone moving lightly and fast. She paused and listened, and the footsteps grew louder and faster stil . Someone was running toward her. Bonnie sped up, stumbling over her feet in her haste. Her shoes skidded on a loose stone in the path and she fel , catching herself on her hands and one knee. The impact stung sharply enough to bring tears to her eyes, but she kicked off her shoes, not caring that she was leaving them behind. She scrambled up and ran faster. The footsteps of her pursuer were louder now, starting to catch up. Their rhythm was strange: loud periodic footfal s with quicker, lighter beats in between. Bonnie realized with horror that there was more than one person chasing her. Her foot skidded again, and she barely caught her balance, staggering sideways a few steps to keep from fal ing, losing more ground. The speaker was addressing a native Indians, most likely her mother. The speaker was trying to trace her culture and trying to differentiate it from her physical and characteristic behavior. In this address the speaker is trying to deny her native identity as American Indian and specifying that it is Native American. It appears the mother was American but the father was Indian. (Burn 741) The poem has the humor in the of living in identity denial yet when the speaker seem to be very much aware of the culture of her identity such as archery practice, stoic face and not drinking a lot. This forms the first theme of this poem of cultural identity denial even though there are physical and behavioral attributes that are associated with the Indian native culture. The speaker consider the Indian rugs very cheap as compared to the American rugs, thus the speaker does not want to be identified with them . (Burn 741) The second humor that is in this poem is the manner in which the speaker is addressing the mother, especially when referring to the father. The speaker is referring to the father as an Indian lover to the mother. The speaker makes it more humorous by perceiving and elaborating how tight the father and the mother were before the speaker was born. This is the second serious theme in the poem. (Burn 741- 742) There are certain phrases that are repeated through out the poem with respective effect. The ‘Yea Uh-huh’ phrase is repeated in the phrase as a scone and laugh at the issues in the theme such as culture and identity. (Hughes 935- 936). The writer complication is the assignment that was given about who they are as blacks yet the tutor is white. This assignment in itself is judgmental hence the complication on the writers side. The writing assignment is fulfilled when the writer goes to an isolated place at the institution and describes their identity on personal and in relations to others in the society. The speaker happens to be the only black student in their class, perhaps the oldest at twenty two years and feels discriminated for the color identity. On arrest, she resists and believes she is not a criminal and will wait for her husband to come out with proof. But this is not resolved as the policeman is impatient there is nobody coming to her rescue. Eventually she must have given in to the arrest. ( Byatt 502-504). Sumita initially cries of it as she does not have a chance to choose her groom. She also is not for the idea of going to America as she finds the culture quite conflicting with her current beliefs. However Divakaruni explores Sumita’s new life experience from the cloth point of view. As soon as Sumita is married, she gets a whole new experience that ranges from how women in America dress, kiss in public and socialize in the community. This is quite a shift from the normal Indian culture including drinking. (Divakaruni, 214- 219) The Author weaves into the first section to show that everything is in order according to the Indian culture of pre-arranged marriages. The reader will initially see no signs that there are other controversial themes such as the pre-arranged marriages and the roles of the parents on such occasions. In this fist section, the author dwell on the traditional Indian clothes exposition especially the ones worn by the brides in the wedding day. (Divakaruni, 214- 215) Somesh was initially characterized as well able man who is kind and decent and a provider. Later Somesh turn out to be a typical American with drinking and dressing practices that are not well known by the parents. Somesh was also considered a caring man by the parents.
